We’ve discovered a new-to-us orange, the Cara Cara. We’ve gotten them twice now from our local co-op, Deep Roots, and they’re absolutely delicious. I’m not sure specifically where these oranges originate, but form what I’ve been able to gather online they’re mostly grown in California. Food miles much?
We get as much food [...]
Bush’s approval rating drops after the SOTU. Breaks my heart, really.
I was tagged by Liz. Guess I’ll have to step up.
I’m supposed to come up with “six weird/unknown things about me”. I’m going to take some writer’s license with this rule. I don’t like conforming to norms anyway.
Here goes:
* I’m a populist that leans moderately to the right, [...]
How to be good to yourself
I’m pleased to announce that Joyce and I been recruited as writers for Growers and Grocers, and I’ve also signed on as Editor. We’d like to thank Cate O’Malley of the Well Fed Network for bringing us on board.
Not to worry, nothing will change here at Low Mileage Food or Nitty Gritty. (Though, [...]

Last year researchers at the University of Chicago took the Prius down a peg when they turned their attention to another gas guzzling consumer purchase. They noted that feeding animals for meat, dairy, and egg production requires growing some ten times as much crops as we’d need if we just [...]

Three years ago, we started a tradition we refer to as Tday 2. We both like Thanksgiving, and having a day to think about the things that we are grateful for in our lives, but I have family obligations that [...]

One of the items on the master LMF To Do list is making meal bars of some kind. Think something like a granola bar or Powerbar and you’ll get the idea. Possible ingredients might be peanut butter, granola, nuts, sunflower seeds, and dried fruit.
There’s a specific reason I’m asking. I just started [...]
Changes have been made. I added an extra field in the comments area where you have to enter a particular word. Sort of a poor-man’s Captcha. The word that needs to be entered is right there in the comments area, but it’s been obfuscated with javascript so bots can’t read it. [...]
Low Mileage Food is one year old today. We’ve had a lot of fun with it so far, and we’re glad we’ve gotten acquainted with so many of you. Thanks for being a part of our first year.
This is the first of an occasional series of posts, first mentioned here, highlighting products that are made in the U.S. This post deals with something we all need everyday – clothes. Here’s what I’ve found so far:
Pointer Brand has a range of denim products as well as some t-shirts and other [...]
Chevrolet introduced a new kind of hybrid vehicle, the Volt, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. I think their approach of having a small engine functioning as an onboard generator is exactly what we need. The engine is not connected to the wheels, it strictly serves to charge the [...]
We have two cats, Marty and Ellie. We spotted a flea on Marty last night and another one this morning. We haven’t seen any on Ellie so far. They’re 18 months old, strictly indoors, do not wear flea collars, and this is the first time we’ve seen fleas.
I’m a lifelong cat owner [...]
I’ll be saying more at length over here tomorrow, but I just wanted to pop up and say a word about our dinner tonight. We did local Italian sausage (from Back Woods farm) on homemade hot dog buns, homemade French fries (local potatoes), and salad with local/organic ingredients, and it was all just awesome. [...]
As I mentioned here, I’m going to do a weekly post of nifty things I find on the web. No specific topic, just anything that strikes my fancy. Some may be old favorites of mine that have been online for a while, and some will be new and shiny. In keeping with [...]
There are good things to be said about hybrid vehicles. They’re increasing public awareness about energy efficiency, and that’s a benefit that will continue to grow as time goes on. A cottage industry has sprung up around the Toyota Prius, with companies offering extra batteries, 110v plug-in recharging capability, and reprogramming of the onboard computer [...]
Joyce and I had a conversation last night during which she stated that she couldn’t recall what it was that made us decide to start focusing on eating mostly local food. I couldn’t recall either. The question has been stewing in the back of my head for hours now and I think I [...]
A Jaguar covered in Post-It notes.
A few thousand wasted Post-It notes aren’t going to make much of a difference in the scheme of things, I know, but this is a perfect illustration of how unconcerned so many people are about wasting resources.
2006 is behind us. The first third of the year was pretty good, the rest of it not so much. The break-in in June while we were out of town and my current job woes (I hate being overqualfied for the kind of IT work I most enjoy) are the two sorest spots.
The [...]
