I have a small confession to make: neither of us wanted to go to the farmer’s market yesterday. Or, rather, neither of us felt like leaving the house yesterday. However, our market of choice is open from 6 to 1 Wednesdays and 7 to noon on Saturdays. We started kicking around [...]

Tonight we had our fourth One Local Summer meal: corn and potato chowder. This stuff was absolutely fantastic. The recipe was a compromise between two from How to Cook Everything: the artery-hardening version, and the (more) healthy version. [...]

Farmer’s Market Report

Yesterday was our weekly farmer’s market trip. The goods:
- potatoes, for homemade French fries, mashed potatoes, and chowder
- corn, for chowder
- blueberries
- one green pepper, originally designated for teriyaki, but that plan was foiled…
- … cube steak, from Rocking F Farm. We’d hoped to get a nice roast, half for teriyaki and half [...]

What do you think?

Hello all,
Firstly, we’d like to thank everyone who’s been reading and commenting on the blog lately. It’s very gratifying to be a part of a growing community dedicated to reducing our impact on our planet, improving the quality of our diets, and supporting local economies.
Joyce and I have an idea. We’d like to [...]

Tuesday night (I wasn’t feeling posty that night, and our webhost was being flaky last night) we had our third One Local Summer dinner, pictured here:

We have local corn, from our farmer’s market, more of our homemade butter, and fritata. I had some of my dad’s cherry tomatoes, as well, because I’m a rebel [...]

We made butter

Butter 003

Originally uploaded by lowmileagefood.

As Joyce mentioned in the last post, we bought a half gallon of cream at the farmer’s market today with the hope of making our own butter. Well, it’s not a hope any longer – we just made some.
We filled [...]

Today we finally managed to set out early for the farmer’s market – almost as soon as we got up, pre-breakfast and pre-coffee (for me) – with the intent of getting to the local chicken folks at Back Woods Family Farm. We’re normally there between eleven and 11:30, and today we were there at [...]

Little spots of green

Sprouting mesclun

I am a rank amateur when it comes to gardening, but I’m really enjoying our little container garden. Everything is coming along nicely.
Many months ago, when we were still in Raleigh, we bought a couple packets of Burpee’s Mesclun sweet [...]

This week’s farmer’s market report:
- beef ribs (on sale at $1.25 a pound!) and ground beef (for salisbury steaks and tacos) from Rocking F Farm
- potatoes from Faucette Produce (I finally remembered to look for their sign)
- eggs and extra sage sausage from Ward’s Farm (we got there a little later than normal this week, [...]

Mild update on the chicken thing: Laurie pointed out to us the other day that Harris Teeter, a local grocery store chain, sells organic chicken in bags, so we went to check it out last night. The result was $12 for a 2 pound bag by Townsends, Inc. (packaged in Delaware; at least [...]

We live in North Carolina. We should be able to get local chicken. Chickens aren’t quite as ubiquitous as, say, hogs in North Carolina, but there’s a lot of chickens in this state. Obtaining local chicken shouldn’t be an issue.
At our local Curb Farmer’s Market, we’ve seen one option: Back Woods [...]

One local summer, week 1

Local dinner 7-3-06

Well, this is week two for everyone else, but we’re a week behind.
Last night, we made our first dinner that was part of the One Local Summer. Pictured is the result. Tomatoes and potatoes from the Curb Farmer’s [...]

This is the newest addition to our family, a 1994 Ford Ranger that used to belong to my mother. We decided her name is Maggie. We drove it back from our recent trip to Seattle. Four cylinder, 5-speed, A/C, [...]

We made our first farmer’s market trip in three weeks (we were out of town for the last couple weeks, and got back in very very late last Saturday night. We could have gone out and hit the big market on Sunday, but that so wasn’t happening.)
It was nice being out of town (well, [...]

We were brain-storming ideas this morning for the One Local Summer. Breakfast is a no-brainer, if we run out of ideas; we’ve been eating local weekend breakfasts for some time now. This week, we’re going to do hamburgers and roasted potatoes (scheduled for Wednesday). Some other ideas that we came up with [...]
